Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh students complete their practice walk

Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh students have spent the last couple of weeks planning their route cards using OS Maps for their practice walk. Students have worked on using 6 figure grid references, map symbols and distance to plan their route from St Paul’s Academy to Oxleas café at Shooters Hill.

On Friday 24th March, the Year 11s walked with full kit – including stoves and tents – from the school. Students work in groups independently to navigate along the Green Chain walk and meeting staff at checkpoints.

The teams battled inclement weather of winds and heavy rain. All students completed the walk within 3 hours and should be commended as this was the first time many had navigated independently. We look forward to their qualifying expeditions in July.
