  • Speak Out Challenge: Day 2

Day two of Jack Petchey's Speak Out Challenge was an incredible experience for our young people, filled with positivity and courage.

The workshop created a safe space where every student felt valued and empowered. From the very beginning, inclusion was clear. The activities were designed to encourage everyone to embrace their uniqueness and the uniqueness of others. I saw a real transformation in the students’ attitudes. Those who were hesitant and shy at the start left with newfound confidence and a stronger sense of self-belief.

There was one student who felt overwhelmed by the new surroundings and asked to go back to class just 30 minutes in. We made a deal - I promised to take him back if he didn’t feel like he was getting anything out of it after lunch. Within half an hour, the facilitator’s energy and carefully designed activities had completely won him over. He was fully engaged though timid ðŸ¤—

    Outcomes

All 28 students left with improved public speaking skills and a deeper understanding of themselves and others.

    • They’re now better prepared to enter a room with confidence and be open to learning from others.
    • They’re also better able to develop and deliver impromptu speeches.
    • They’re clearer and more purposeful in their communication.
    • They’re more respectful of different perspectives, even if they challenge their own.
    • They’re able to structure coherent and impactful speeches.
    • They worked on voice projection.
    • They connected with their peers in a fun and professional way.
    • They used fewer filler words to make their delivery more impactful.

The facilitator was engaging, knowledgeable, and highly relatable; he created a safe yet challenging space for students to take risks and grow.

One highlight was a timed speaking activity where students delivered spontaneous mini-speeches, ranging from 45 seconds to a minute. We were proud of them as they explored topics, showcasing their remarkable progress in such a short time.

This is unreal - I never expected this level of excellence.

    Looking Ahead

Not only was the day a resounding success, but it highlighted some prime opportunities for refinement. These include:

    • Practising active listening and remaining silent when others are speaking.
    • Reducing small talk between transitions and activities,
    • Increasing opportunities for students to speak in front of others.

Overall, it was a truly transformative experience for all the students involved.

Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge is more than just a public speaking workshop; it’s a life-changing initiative that empowers young people with the skills to find and use their voice. Today, our students didn’t just learn how to speak; they learned how to be heard. By doing so, they took a step closer to becoming confident, compassionate leaders of tomorrow.
