Greenwich Schools' Netball League

SPA Netball Girls’ Triumph at Iconic Copper Box Arena

Monday 13th May saw our Year 7, 8 and 9 Netball girls, alongside their coach Miss Duffy, travel to the Copper Box Arena at the iconic Olympic Park, Stratford for the inaugural 2019 Greenwich Schools’ Netball League Finals Day.  This event stood as the culmination of a very successful 2018/2019 Greenwich Schools’ Netball League season with the best Year 7, 8 and 9 schools teams across the borough coming together with the aim of being crowned 2019 borough champions.  In total a magnificent 130 young women were in attendance on the day from six schools across the borough; clear evidence of the significant growth and development of netball across both primary and secondary schools throughout Greenwich over the last six years since its establishment.

Following an extremely successful league campaign, seeing them finish top of their group, first up was our energetic Year 7 Netball team, led by Captain Daniella Opoku-Mensah.  Their final saw them face a very determined Plumstead Manor team.  Getting off to a flying start, the girls finished the first quarter 2 - 0 ahead.  Continuing to battle through the remaining three quarters of the match, with the game ebbing and flowing throughout, the girls managed to hold on to emerge 5 - 1 winners on the day.  This is a fantastic achievement for the girls in what has been their first season representing St Paul’s Academy.  Following the final, Captain Daniella commented saying,

“I am really happy to be involved with the Year 7 Netball team, to have the opportunity to play at the Copper Box was amazing!  It was an unreal experience because it was the first time I have been there.  Netball has been a part of my life since primary school, now doing it in secondary school shows that I have improved a lot.  Playing with the team has been fun even when we lose.  Losing made us improve and become better which is why we have grown to be a strong team.  I cannot wait to be able to carry on my netball journey in Year 8 to see how much I can achieve.”

With continued hard work and dedication to their sport it is hoped that this group of talented players can continue to grow as a team and excel, enjoying many more future successes.  Well done girls, keep up the good work.  2018/2019 Year 7 Netball Squad:

Next up representing SPA was our Year 8 Netball team.  A team formed of very tall and athletic young women, their challenge on the day saw them face familiar local rivals in Blackheath High School.  Having previously lost their final league fixture to Blackheath by a single goal, our girls were determined to right this wrong and come out on top this time around.  However, with Blackheath winning the toss and taking first centre pass, this left our girls immediately on the back foot, needing a crucial turnover from Blackheath’s centre pass if they were to begin in front; they did just that!  Breaking down Blackheath’s first centre pass the girls went on to score three goals without reply to end the first quarter in front.  The girls worked extremely hard throughout the match, in both attack and defence to minimise Blackheath’s scoring chances as well as produce as many for SPA as possible.  The girls showed great determination and at the final whistle were ecstatic at their 7 - 3 win over their rivals in what was a wonderful, fast-paced game of high skill level and teamwork.  Captained by Jasmine Adonri and Amara Chukwurah-Okolo, all of the girls are keen to continue working hard to improve on their match play as they move forward into the 2019/2020 season.  Reflecting on this year’s season, Jasmine said,

“The Year 8 team have all worked so hard to get to where we are now.  We all love netball and love playing with our team.  We all hope to achieve more as we grow but were so happy to have got this opportunity.  We hope to carry on our coaching with Miss Duffy and improve even more.”

Co-captain Amara also commented, “I am so proud to say we have won the Greenwich Schools’ Netball League Finals and to say that I am a part of the team!”

We wish the girls good luck and look forward to hearing of what will undoubtedly be many more future successes.  2018/2019 Year 8 Netball Squad:

With Miss Duffy tasked with the organisation and delivery of the event on the day, being able to perform the role of both event organiser and coach would simply not have been possible without the help and support of Mr Francis, Mr Candy and Miss McWilliams as well as our amazing Year 9 Sports Leaders.  Helping to set up the venue as well as greet and register teams on arrival, the girls really became the face of our Finals Day.  The girls worked exceptionally hard to ensure the teams were warmed-up properly before their final as well as assisting with time-keeping, score-keeping, management of equipment, interval music and presentations.  Well done to Victoria, Kyah, Beatrice, Jeraldine, Ella, Bernice and Joelle on their continued hard work and illustration of such promising leadership skills; the future is very bright for these talented young ladies.

A big thank you to Stephanie Turner, Peabody, for giving up her time to help umpire many of the finals on the day.  Thank you to Michelle Moore, award-winning leadership consultant for sport and inclusion for coming along to support the event on the day, speaking with staff and students as well as presenting all of the awards to students.  Thank you to Royal Borough of Greenwich and all at GLL for their continued support of the development of netball throughout Greenwich as well as helping us to secure such a wonderful venue in the Copper Box to host our event.  It is hoped that our League Finals Day can become an annual event at the Copper Box Arena, with, in time, Year 5/6 the whole way through to Year 11 finals taking place on the day.  This is an exciting time for schools’ netball in the borough encompassing an energy and drive that we wish to continue building upon with many future ventures, ensuring our young people are exposed to as many opportunities to train and compete in Netball as possible.

The results on the day were as follows:

  • Year 7 - St Paul’s Academy (5) Vs Plumstead Manor (1)
  • Year 8 Division 2 - Thomas Tallis (3) Vs Harris Academy Greenwich (4)
  • Year 8 Division 1 - St Paul’s Academy (7) Vs Blackheath High School (3)
  • Year 9 Division 2 - Eltham Hill (11) Vs Thomas Tallis (4)
  • Year 9 Division 1 - Blackheath High School (11) Vs Harris Academy Greenwich (13)
