GCSE Results Summer 2009

For students at Saint Paul's Academy, Summer 2009 GCSE results have demonstrated that with hard work and first class teaching, students can achieve far more than they ever thought possible. Yet again, we have exceeded all of our targets and students of all abilities have performed magnificently. We are confident that these results will give us our best ever 'value added' score which means that the vast majority of students have moved far beyond the levels that the government would think reasonable given their achievement in primary school.

Of course, results like these are the outcome of five years preparation. Last minute revision sessions and examination practice are very important but, we believe nothing takes the place of five years outstanding teaching and learning and the teaching staff at Saint Paul's deserve both praise and thanks for their unstinting dedication. Similarly, such results would not be possible without the input of the support staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that our students receive the very best we are able to offer.

When Saint Paul's became an Academy in September 2005, the decision was taken to lengthen the school day by almost an hour a day. This decision has obviously had a significant impact on students' learning as has the fact that students are able to work in school from 7 in the morning until 5.30 in the evening.

Statistically, many of our students live in areas or conditions which are categorised as deprived. At Saint Paul's, we aim to offer all students the best opportunities whether they are black or white, male or female, academically able or students who find learning challenging. This year, eighteen of our students achieved fifteen or more A* -C grades which represents a phenomenal achievement and which has been made possible by our policy of entering students for examinations when they are ready rather than by chronological age. This type of achievement represents a huge breadth of study with subjects ranging from Latin to PE and from Drama to Philosophy; obviously, this puts students in an excellent position to move forward into Post 16 and University education.

We look forward to the future with confidence. If this is what we can achieve given the huge limitations of our present site we will hopefully be able to achieve much more, in many diverse areas, when we move to our new building in January.
