Successful Cul Camp in South-East London

A very successful Cul Camp has taken place at Saint Paul's Academy in Abbey Wood during the first week of the summer break. The event was co-ordinated by Michael Donnelly, Director of Gaelic Football at Saint Paul's. His coaching team for the week included Paula Henry and Brian Smyth (members of staff at Saint Paul's) and Aisling Hogan (Saint Luke's 6th Form College).

The event attracted more than 20 boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 13 from a range of schools across the London Boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich. The week was action-packed and fun-filled which revolved around maximising enjoyment and sustaining participant involvement in Gaelic Games. The activities were game based with a strong emphasis placed on skill acquisition. A key focus of the week was to optimize learning, enhance friendships and improve physical and psychological well-being. At the end of the week all of the participants were given full details of how they can become members of Dulwich Harps GFC for next season.

The programme was organized so that a different aspect of the game was worked on each day. It included coaching specific skills of the game and the opportunity for children to put into practice what they have learned through small sided games. On the last day a blitz was organized to provide each child with an introduction to competitive games. The Cul Camp was concluded with a presentation of Awards to the participants.

Following the success of our first ever Cul Camp in South-East London, planning has already started for next summer.

Saint Paul's appears on Korean television

We were asked by the Korean Embassy to explain the changes we have made over the past five years to a group of Korean head teachers. This event was so successful that the school was contacted by a Korean television company who interviewed members of staff for Korean television.

Pioneers - leading the way!

Rev Father David Camilleri with Niall Mc Cann and students

A wonderful celebration of hope and commitment of our students took place on Thursday 3rd July at the Academy. Through the guidance of Niall Mc Cann, Assistant Principal, Rev Father David Camilleri celebrated the launch of the 'Pioneer Youth Group'. The Pioneer Total Abstinence Association (PTAA) was founded in 1898 by Fr. James Cullen in Dublin to address the problem of alcohol abuse which was rampant in Irish Society at that time. The Pioneer association has, over 1000 years spread throughout the world and its membership is continually growing in countries in Africa and Latin America.

The Pioneer Youth is dedicated to providing a pathway for young people from the age of 12-16 to making informative decisions about alcohol. The group of students who received their badges have made a promise to the Sacred Heart and themselves to abstain from drinking alcohol until they reach 18. The evening was celebrated by friends and family of all students as well as Mr Conn Dee, special guest and also a member of the PTAA in London.

Congratulation to all involved. If anyone would like further information on the Pioneer Youth group, please contact Mr McCann at the Academy or follow the link - www.pioneertotal.ie

Mozambique - partnership through sport

The Dreams and Teams project, which was set up last October by Mr McCann and Mr Bradley from the sports Department, is growing from strength to strength.

We must begin by thanking all those families, partner schools, governors, staff and other stakeholders in the academy for their interest and kindness in supporting our African project.

We welcomed our Mozambique teaching colleagues last week to London. Of course, we showed them the array of sights in our capital city but our main focus with the project is the cultural exchange of sport and education. They were shown round by our three very able Portuguese speaking year 7 students and given an insight into our successes, into our structures and policies, or vision and ethos and most importantly our sport.

Pat and Cardosa

They were amazed at the lasting impression that sport has on our students. They were very impressed with the behaviour and the dedication towards learning especially in the many subject areas they were able to observe. Antonio, the English/Sport teacher and Cardosa, the Principal were able to go and watch an Under 16 Gaelic football match in Peckham Rye, where our boys from Yr 9-11 were competing against the Round Towers team from Mitcham and afterwards visitedSaint Alfeges Church, in Greenwich, where the music Department were holding 'An evening of Music' which we all, including our visitors, were amazed with the array of talent and performance as a whole.

They have now returned to Mozambique with many wonderful colourful images and stories to share as well as a variety of new initiaitvies which can be introduced into their school. They have been in communication with us since their return thanking us all for the support and commitment to the project and the generosity given to their children in Mozambique.
