Launched in April 2006 by the Prime Minister at the time, Tony Blair, the Kickz football programme is a joint initiative between the football industry and the police, supported nationally by the Government's Respect Task Force, Russell Commission and v charity. Its purpose is to target some of the most disadvantaged areas in the country in order to create safer, stronger and more respectful communities through the development of young people's potential.This aim will be achieved by:
- Engaging young people in a range of constructive activities which link to the Every Child Matters framework;
- Increasing the playing, coaching and officiating opportunities for participants;
- Breaking down barriers between the police and young people;
- Reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in the targeted neighbourhoods;
- Creating routes into education, training and employment;
- Encouraging volunteering within projects and throughout the target neighbourhoods;
- Increasing young people’s interest in and connections with the professional game;
Kickz is a highly distinctive programme which embraces the aspirations of the diverse partnership that lies behind it. A partnership which links broad government policy initiatives such as the Every Child Matters and Respect programmes with local policing strategies on the basis of football's intrinsic appeal to many young people.
Within this coalition, football is not regarded as a panacea, but rather as a means with which to connect with young people as part of a longer term strategy which will enable them to:
- Work on their talents;
- Look after themselves;
- Help others and give something back.
