Saint Paul’s Academy along with other schools from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland took part in the second 'Times Spelling Bee Championship'. The Academy entered a team which consists of four members - three team players and one reserve. All the pupils taking part had to be 12 years of age between 1st September 2009 and 31st August 2010.

The aim of the Spelling Bee Championship is to make spelling fun, help teachers raise the profile of spelling and develop the talents of their students. With proselytise, garrotte, idiosyncrasy and chiaroscuro proving to be some of the toughest words to spell in the 2009 competition, 2010 was an even tougher challenge for all competing teams especially with the introduction of homophones!
The competition was a Literacy initiative established in 2008 by the English Department in conjunction with the Sports Specialism. Students are utilising the magnificent IT facilities at the Academy and are encouraged to use the Times Spell Bee online resources during lessons and at home. The winning teams progress to the semi-finals and then the national Grand Final which are to be held in London later in the year.

The Saint Paul’s team – ‘SPARKS’ were very confident and ready for anything. They had been practicing for quite a while under the supervision of our resident Spelling expert Miss Worden. Although the team did not win their heat they performed extremely well despite the extreme pressures of the competition. Well done team better luck next year.
If you are interested in being part of the SPARKS spelling squad see Miss Worden or Mr Mc Cann for further details.
