Pure & Applied Sciences
At Saint Paul's Academy the central aim of the Pure & Applied Science Learning Zone is
to help students to develop the skills, attitudes and qualities needed for them to become contributory
members of an increasingly scientific and technological society. To achieve this we will provide the
students with a wide range of activities and experiences that will not only challenge them to develop
their conceptual frameworks but also encourage them to reflect upon the impact that Science has on society.
The curriculum offered makes full use of appropriate scientific investigation opportunities, maximises
the use of e-learning wherever possible and supports classroom based work with suitable enrichment
activities such as drama presentations, visits to scientific institutions and field trips.
At Key Stage 3 students follow a scheme of work that is
based on the themes of Cells, Energy, Forces, Interdependence and Particles. The course ensures students
are provided with regular formative and summative assessments of their progress and students are
encouraged to take an active part in assessing their own progress against the required learning
objectives.
At Key Stage 4 all students follow a Science
course of (2 GCSEs or equivalents). The
majority of students study a modular course
that allows them to be assessed over a
number of occasions so giving them the
maximum opportunity to demonstrate
their attainment. The remaining students
follow an Applied Science course in which
the role of Science in the world of work is a
central focus. In September 2006, a range
of new courses was introduced in line with
the national strategy for GCSE Science. As
the Academy expands additional courses,
such as GCSEs in the separate sciences, will
be introduced to broaden the curriculum
offered to the students.
