Gardening was introduced to Saint Paul's by Ms Stevenson in the Academic Year 2004/5. This was an extremely ambitious project given the lack of facilities on the current site! The aim of this project is to make students aware of basic gardening skills along with developing small 'plug' plants into a business opportunity. This project is aimed at students in Year 10 and involves:

• Working out the number of plants required (tomatoes and geraniums) and other materials which are necessary;
• The time scale and the planting, watering and maintenance schedule;
• The marketing and sale of the plants to students, parents and staff at a profit and the use of any profit made. It is agreed that over the next two years any profit can be used to buy some small trees for the new site;
• Visiting Ruxley Manor to see how a professional, large-scale garden centre operates;
• Visiting the Hampton Court Flower Show to look at exotic special and their propagation.

This year a competition for Years 7 and 8 will be held to see who can grow the tallest sunflower - the aim here is to instill some basic interest in horticulture which can be nurtured higher up the school.
